This can be quite a complicated subject and not one that can be easily summarised accurately. Google obviously protect their ranking algorithm so it is not readily available in the public domain, it is also something that is being constantly refined. As a result, the figures used in the examples are entirely fictional and should be used to get a better understanding only, not as a rule!

Google define Page Rank (PR) as votes for a specific page. Therefore to increase a pages rank, it needs In Bound Links (IBL’s). So in simple terms, a page that links to yours is casting your page a vote. The higher the PR of the page that links to yours the more votes that page can cast.
