There are, broadly speaking, 2 Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) approaches to improving performance on Search Engine Results Pages (SERP’s). These are classed as “White Hat” and “Black Hat”. They do not refer to specific methods or practices, I view it more as who’s side are you on?

Basically the major search engines are in general trying to do the right thing. (That is not to say that they are not all money grabbing revenue hungry bar stewards, but that is a separate gripe I will cover another time ! I'm still waiting for an apology from Larry or Sergey!) This can be quite a complicated subject and not one that can be easily summarised accurately. Google obviously protect their ranking algorithm so it is not readily available in the public domain, it is also something that is being constantly refined. As a result, the figures used in the examples are entirely fictional and should be used to get a better understanding only, not as a rule!

Here’s our “simple” explanation… Which hopefully will provide you with a little more insight and not cause too much confusion!

Google define Page Rank (PR) as votes for a specific page. Therefore to increase a pages rank, it needs In Bound Links (IBL’s). So in simple terms, a page that links to yours is casting your page a vote. The higher the PR of the page that links to yours the more votes that page can cast.
